Modern green roofs as a key element of sustainable construction

Green roofs and sustainable construction

Green roofs effectively reduce the formation of urban heat islands, improve air quality, increase rainwater retention and enable an increase in biologically active areas in densely built-up areas. They are an indispensable element of investments that want to meet environmental requirements and comply with the latest standards of ecological construction.

Key layers of the system

The durability of every green roof is based on a comprehensive, well-thought-out layered structure. Efficiency and trouble-free operation depend on the correct selection and arrangement of individual layers. Each of them plays a key role, affecting the durability of the entire investment.

Green roof waterproofing – the basis for structural safety

The most important element is, of course, the waterproofing layer, which acts as a barrier against water penetration, root penetration and the effects of chemicals from the soil. Its tightness and durability determine the safety of the entire structure. NEXLER bituminous felts (e.g. Green Roof PYE PV250 S50) not only fully meet these requirements, but thanks to double SBS modification, they also combine high damage resistance with flexibility, even in extreme temperatures. This combination guarantees durability and reliable protection for years to come, both in green roofs and on intensively used surfaces.
The system is further complemented by Connect NexGreen, which is used for the fast, durable, and watertight execution of flashings and sealing details, such as service penetrations. The product retains all the benefits of the standard Connect solution while also featuring resistance to root penetration, allowing for its safe application in green roof systems.

Filter and separation layer – protection against system silting

Directly above the drainage layer, there is usually a filtration layer whose task is to retain solid particles contained in the substrate (e.g. NexGreen Geo 110). Thanks to this, the drainage system does not become silted up and the water drainage remains unobstructed even after many years of use. Calendered geotextiles (e.g. NexGreen Geo Safe 350) can also act as a separation layer, protecting the waterproofing against mechanical damage and separating materials with different properties.

Innovative protective and drainage membranes

In some solutions, the drainage and filtration layers can be combined into a single layer, creating a protective and drainage membrane integrated with geotextile (e.g. NexGreen Duo BB 20/200 P). This simplifies the design, reduces the number of materials used and, as a result, lowers costs and increases the efficiency of the roofing system.

What is geotextile calendering?

It is a process of mechanical compaction and smoothing of fibres under the influence of high temperature and roller pressure. This makes the material more compact, resistant to abrasion and mechanical damage, and its surface smooth and less absorbent. In practice, calendered geotextiles better protect roof layers (e.g. waterproofing), reduce root penetration and improve separation between materials with different properties.

Stabilising geogrid – green roof on slopes and heavily used surfaces

On roofs with varied structures or slopes, a reinforcing and stabilising layer, known as a geogrid (e.g. NexGreen Road 440/75/13), is particularly important. Its role is to keep the layers and substrate in the correct position and to distribute loads evenly. Thanks to this, it is possible to construct green roofs even on slopes and in areas exposed to heavy foot traffic.
